Tourist sites

More than 37 beaches
of white sand, a lagoon with transparent turquoise water,
the Caribbean sun... Saint Martin, or Sint Maarten for
its Dutch part, is certainly close to being paradise
on earth. Yet beyond this image of well-being and idleness,
Saint Martin is also an island with a rich history,
as shown by the numerous heritage sites for visitors
to see.
What to see in the French part
of the island...
The
imposing Fort St-Louis, the biggest historic monument
on St Martin, dominating the town of Marigot.
On Wednesday and Saturday mornings visit the picturesque
quayside market of Marigot, the capital of the French
part, with its colonial houses, luxury boutiques, cafés
- and predominantly French spirit.
Grand-case,
a small fishing village famous for its wooden houses
with their pastel shades.
... and in the Dutch part
Philipsburg
Bay from where you can pick out the vestiges of Fort
Amsterdam
The
parrot jungle where parrots, budgerigars and cockatoos
rival in their splendid colours...
Without forgetting, of course, the numerous sporting
activities on offer! Diving, parapenting, golf, tennis,
hiking or horse-back riding, ask for details from the
Tourist Information Office near the marina.
